Aurora Symphony Orchestra and LEAD! with Jukka-Pekka Saraste

At the heart of Aurora Music’s Trollhättan/Vänersborg Masterclasses and Festival is the Aurora Symphony Orchestra. Carrying on in the tradition of working together with leading conductors and soloists, this year Aurora not only builds on its relationship with Jukka-Pekka Saraste and his LEAD! mentorship program but welcomes outstanding soloist Elisabeth Leonskaja and our longstanding partner Johannes Gustavsson.

The Aurora Symphony Orchestra provides a platform and opportunity for most of the students at our masterclass to learn from and perform with leading conductors and soloists. The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Mendlessohn’s Symphony No. 3 and Beethoven’s Emperor concerto with Elisabeth Leonskaja as soloist.

LEAD! with Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Launched in 2018 in Stockholm, Aurora Music is proud to continue its collaboration with legendary conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste and his orchestral mentorship program “LEAD!”. The program has been specially designed with orchestral leaders from around the globe to help coach young musicians to develop the unique and necessary skills and understanding to become top orchestral players and leaders on their instruments.

LEAD! educates through the rehearsal and performance process focusing on helping musicians learn to communicate both as leaders and as section players, to understand and feel comfortable in a variety of styles and repertoire, to communicate with conductors and to ensure quality playing under any circumstances. Maestro Saraste and his mentors aim to give students the tools to develop their individual character and personality and the confidence and knowledge to use them in the orchestral environment and beyond.

The LEAD! team will also provide opportunities for both private and group discussions on a large range of topics central to artistic life. As well as Maestro Saraste, the LEAD! team will also include the Aurora Chamber Orchestra, Aurora’s own international string orchestra made up of leading string players from all over Europe. Together they are prepared to provide young musicians with the opportunity to learn and discuss vital topics often ignored in music education including career development and maintenance, psychological and emotional life as an artist, personal and professional relationships, as well as more practical topics like handling contracts, negotiations, politics, programming and networking.

“Every conductor and soloist knows how essential a good mentor is, and it’s no different for orchestra members and leaders” – Jukka-Pekka Saraste

LEAD! was designed by maestro Saraste and his team to be a training ground both for young instrumentalists and conductors and is therefore integrated both into the long-standing tradition of Aurora’s Symphony Orchestra program as well as the Aurora Music Conducting Masterclasses.
